Your Code-Breaking Toolkit: How to Solve a Cryptogram
Before we dive into the challenge, here are the essential techniques used by veteran cryptogram solvers:
- Look for Single-Letter Words: In English, the only common single-letter words are “a” and “I”. If you see a single-letter word in the cipher, you can be almost certain it’s one of these.
- Hunt for Common Letters: The most frequently used letters in the English language are E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, and R. The letter that appears most often in your cipher is very likely to be one of these, especially ‘E’.
- Spot Common Word Patterns: Look for repeated three-letter words. One of them is almost guaranteed to be “THE”. Also look for double letters (like in “look”, “soon”, or “letter”).
- Pencil In Your Guesses: The best way to solve is to make educated guesses and see if they work. If you guess that ‘X’ is ‘E’, fill it in everywhere an ‘X’ appears. If this creates nonsensical letter combinations elsewhere, you know your guess was wrong.
